This web 2.0 lesson series has given me an opportunity to explore new spaces an revisit territories I've visited before. It could have been ore fun provided I had more free time to explore. Some things I will never use gain. Others may have some use. I have had some more exposure to what our patrons are using. I do want to re-ierate for those that are "addicted" to web 2.0 -ish thngs is that ther is a tim and a place to use all of these applcations, but dependeing on what you should be doing, your place of employment might not be the place to use these apps, unless that is what you ae suppose to be doing.

SHORT LIST

I used the short list to survey 2.0 applications.

Looking through the choices I decided to look at a geneology application. I chose "Amiglia." I ended up seeing an HTTP Status 404 -/ intro "Requeted resource not available. I repeated the process --same thng. So I decide to move on.

Let's see how about "frappr". Maps are good. To get to the maps, one had to download the application and set up a wizard. Naaaaaaaa!

I went back to the list. OK ,how about "Urbanspoon". At first it looked like it was a listing of eateries in Chicgo alone, but when I changed the location to Joliet, I got an alphabetical list of restaurants, and a list of "best restaurants" in Joliet. Also included were maps; so I could find the restaurants. My favorite list was the list of "pizzerias" in Joliet.

Online Productivity

Well look what exploration did for me. I have a zoho email account... yikes. Just what I need...one more e-mail address.

However, I did visit Google docs. I was intrigued by "presentations" and "surveys". They reminded me of Power Point presentations, except they ar pretty much complete. Changes can be made to what's already there, and "away we go". Also, they can be immediately shared. Yoo hoo!!!

LIBRARY THING II

My point to yesterday's post is that it doesn't take a great deal of time or experience to deal with these "mechanisms". If I was really intersted in keeping a catalog of books, then this application would be perfect, and it's pretty easy to use.

I now have an account on Library Thing and have entered 5 books. I must admit that I looked up "Library 2.0" and added books from the entries that came up.

Great littl toy if you want to make sure everything you have is bookmarked everywhere. It's a fun thing too. I'm wondering about how much time most people put into this stuff. If you have three email accounts, and an account for everything that we have sofar looked into, when do you have time to do anything else but check accounts?

PODCASTS

A friend of mine at an Iowa academic library used podcasts for training purposes. There were links fron her library web page.

I first tried Podcast Alley. I was thingking of the Minnesota/ Greenbay game last night. So I searched Minnesota Vikings and one of the available Podcasts was "Minnesota Sports Radio." Going back to suggestion of libraries, one of the choices was "The Library Survival Guide."

Podcast.com made the "William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum" accessible. It did require that you register with your name and account number etc.

RSS FEEDS

I opened an account which wasn't hard. I signed up using my g-mail account. I don't know if that's exactly the right way to say that, but I know what iIsaid. Anyway, there are some instances where I can see an automatic notification of something as being pertinent to my job. There are things that I think I don't need to know immediately. I guess a choice of RSS feeds gives you the ability to pick and choose. To be homest, for this assignment, I used blogs I have been following for some time and the rest came from a technology list of RSS feed.

I can't help but think that are times when WEB 2.0 might not be appropriate. Is it OK to send Facebook Updates while you are at work? Is it OK to update your blog while you should be working? If these things are an essential part of your job, the answer would be "yes". However, most peope I know don't have this as an essential function of employment. So where does technology cross the line?

You Tube

I looked at a couple of different things on You Tube. There is a nice presentation about a community I used to live in...Keokuk, Iowa.

I also saw of footage of a reace a Jules Raceway in Wilmington, Illinois. I was at the race and a couple of friends of mine are featured in the video.

I think, that one of the better aspects of You Tube is that you are invited to comment on what you see. One of the pitfalls is that you can be caught on video tape at anytime, and it can be put on YouTube.

Another thing that I noticed, that could be quite beneficial to libraries, is the recording of library programs (such as author fairs). It's great way of advertising a library and the programs and events sponsored by them.

What I didn't say is that the picture in my earlier post today, came from Flickr. It obviously was taken at the Joliet Library, by the Joliet Public Library PNG Computer Club in September of 2007.

By the way...I want to say that although you have to be careful with information on wikis such as wikipedia...you really have to be careful using information from blogs and websites as well. remember to check when the publication date of the article is/was -- is it current?. Check to see if the author is reputable -- are they an expert? Where did the information come from-- is it documented? Keep these things in mind.

I think that some wikis like Wikipedia are a useful tool as they are a good jumping off point when you really don't know cery much about a topic. Please make sure that you verify information before you claim it is gospel truth. Usual stuff is checked pretty thoroughly but every once in a while a fabrication gets in.

As far as microblogs like Twitter, I find it unnecessary to let people know my ecery move and I certainly don't want to know the every move of others. There's enough of that on Facebook. I don't need another avenue of communication. I wonder if theres' a term for over-communication.

I took a look at the "State of the Blogosphere", took a tour of "Technorati", and found out "What's Popular".

I philosophised that blogs are really a kind of personal social networking sight. If you want to share your blog with others you can, if you don't want to you can set it so that you don't have to. Information on some blogs is based on fact. Many blogs relay what is thought about topics rather than taking into consideration the facts. It's OK to be pursuasive to your own points. It's your blog.

I can't say that anything about Technorati surprised me, but I can't say I was particularly interested in most of it.

As for the "Optional" assignment, I tried to claim my blog. I entered the required field and then attmpeted the claim I was instructed to wait for an email at my designated address and then enter the confirmation code. I even clicked on the link that said "Click her to send a new verification code." Still no verification code.

However, I did submit the blog via ping.

I get the tag thing but elected not to do that at this time.

Wikipedia defines blogs as:
A Blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.
The Blogosphere is the collective community of all blogs. Since all blogs are on the Internet by definition, they may be seen as interconnected and socially networked. Discussions "in the Blogosphere" have been used by the media as a gauge of public opinion on various issues.
